We recently watched a bird build a nest on our back porch. Back and forth, back and forth she flitted and worked to create a place for her eggs. In the end, for one reason or another, she never used the nest, and we were able to take it down and study it. It was an amazing collection of bits and pieces of twigs, string, lint, and whatever else she had found. We confirmed that nest building is a messy process.

At Casa Viva, we believe in the role of the biological family. We see our Casa Viva families as providing a “second nest” for children who have found themselves alone in fragile situations. One of our first goals is to work to restore the child to his or her own biological family—the “first nest”— if and when that can become a safe and loving environment.

Most definitely the God of Creation could have arranged a room at the inn, but He did not—so the stable is a God-designed part of the Christmas story, one that should cause us to stop and reflect. Someone intervened—perhaps the innkeeper or his wife—someone found room for Joseph and Mary in the stable. And as a result of making room, they became firsthand witnesses to the greatest story of all time.
